God has promised to end suffering - Romans 8
(Romans 8:18-25)

Speaker Jonny Grant, on January 20, 2019
Part of the Healing Through Suffering series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

Healing through Suffering
God has promised to end suffering – Joy

Tears to Joy

‘…weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.’ Psalm 30v5

‘See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered,
nor will they come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create, for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight and its people a joy. I will rejoice over Jerusalem and take delight in my people; the sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no more.’ Isaiah 65v17-19

Our Present Groaning
Groaning to Glory
Present sufferings v Eternal Glory

‘For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.’ 2 Corinthians 4v17

Our Future Glory
Liberated world

‘You (the children of God) will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills will burst into song before you, and all the tress of the field will clap their hands. Instead of the thorn bush will grow the juniper, and instead of the briars the myrtle will grow. This will be the Lord’s renown an everlasting sign, that will endure for ever.’ Isaiah 55v12-13

Redeemed bodies

‘The enjoyment of God is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied. To go to heaven, fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here. Fathers and mothers, husbands, wives, or children, or the company of earthly friends, are but shadows; but God is the substance. These are but scattered beams, but God is the sun. These are but streams, but God is the ocean…(we will be) enraptured with joys that are forever increasing, and yet forever full.’

-Jonathan Edwards

Romans 8:18–25 (Listen)

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
